SOUP KITCHEN NEWS!

The Manna House of Hospitality recently completed much needed renovations.  Steam tables, a stovetop griddle and a new layout and are among the exciting new features to the kitchen.  The new kitchen and pantry area will be a great asset as they continue to serve almost 400 hot meals a day to homeless individuals and families and those living in poverty in the community. The food pantry feeds 200 families a month with staples that are critical to keeping families fed and paying rent each month.

You may be interested to learn that meals continued to be served at the Open Door Shelter during this time of construction.  As you may know, OLF has two monthly collections.  An OLF crew prepares and serves these donations at the Soup Kitchen.  On Tuesday, August 5th, both donors and crew were asked to make adjustments as they pulled off another wonderful meal under extraordinary circumstances.  Donors were asked to double their donations for that day, since the service time during this period of construction was extended to combine the lunch and dinner meals.  Their generosity was amazing!  We are grateful that our crew, under the leadership of Art Malcarney, was allowed to prepare the meal in the OLF school's kitchen and our dedicated crew adjusted and extended their hours as needed.  The meal was served outside of the Shelter under sunny skies and tents.  It was a beautiful thing!

Our Lady of Fatima parishioners help by providing support in the following ways.

  • Volunteers work at the Manna House Soup Kitchen from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays and Thursdays of each month, preparing and serving meals.
  • Parishioners donate the food to be served at the Manna House Soup Kitchen on the 1st or 3rd Tuesdays of the month.  Each donor is assigned a specific food item(s), which they provide on a monthly basis, for the preparation of that day’s hot meal.  The items are collected at the Parish Center in time for a 10:15 Tuesday morning pick-up.  Some items may be dropped off in the days just prior.
  • Each morning parishioners deliver food donations from the Village Market, Stop and Shop, and/or Starbucks to the Manna House Soup Kitchen and Person to Person.  Drivers participation varies from a weekly to a monthly basis.
  • Every year, on the 4th Saturday of October, parishioners collect donations at the Wilton Stop and Shop in order to help stock the shelves at the Manna House and Person to Person.  This event is coordinated as part of Make a Difference Day. This year Make a Difference Day is October 25th.
  • Occasionally there is a special non-perishables food drive held at the Parish Center.  This will be announced in the Church Bulletin, as needed.
